There’s a common challenge that many of us face every day.
Let’s look at the simple situation in which you have to show something on your screen to Bill, or you want to see something on Bill’s screen. But Bill is not there with you. Here, your problems begin…
Now, if you are lucky, Bill may be available right now, because even though he is a skillful person, his job does not make him all that busy, and he lives at the same time zone, and he doesn’t mind unexpected distractions (if you know this guy, let me know, I want to hire him). And if you are really lucky, you and him may be able to set up a screen-sharing session using web conference software or one of the many other tools available for that, so that you will see his screen or he will see yours, over Internet.
Then, after 5-15 minutes of struggling with getting the two of you to hear and see everything properly, your mission may be accomplished.
Now, most of us are not very eager to even try this unless we have to. I don’t claim to have exact figures on this, but I’d be surprised if the average success rate of the above were above 20%. That’s why many of us would rather just set up a meeting with Bill face to face next week, which will take an hour for both of you, in order to cover the thing which should have taken only 10 minutes to explain, plus the time it takes to move to the same location.
This is nuts – unless you are the kind of person who just really likes meetings more than getting things done.
We try to offer you something better.
You want to show something to Mary Smith from Acme? Go to https://screenmail.to/mary.smith@acme.com. You will see a couple of recording buttons appear on the bottom of your screen. Then you just start showing and explaining. Press the Stop button, wait for a minute or two, and you can see your explanation turned into a video presentation. Check it out, press Send, and you are done. If Mary has a ScreenMail account, she will immediately see the video. If not, she will get an invitation email and has to make a few clicks and set up a password for future use. And you are done.
Want Mary to show something to you? Just ask her to Screenmail you at https://screenmail.to/(your email address). When she sends you the screenmail, you will see an email which lets you see that video.
Sounds like a utopia? If it were this simple, why haven’t we had this for since, like, 2002? It turns out that making all this actually work smoothly is technically quite challenging. The reason our team was able to pull this off is that we have been developing and perfecting our technology since 2007, testing it at thousands and thousands of workstations of our business customers.
We have learnt what are the things that our users actually need to communicate effectively – and what they don’t.
It’s here. It’s done. We will keep improving it on many fronts, but you can start using it now for free. Try it out and let us know what you think!
